Bye TikTok Notes, Welcome Watch History Feature

Keynote

In April 2025, TikTok is making key changes. The photo app TikTok Notes will shut down in May, with users encouraged to move to Lemon8. A new Watch History feature is being tested on Android, helping users rewatch past videos. However, scheduling tools remain limited, only available on desktop with no edit options and frequent issues on mobile.

TikTok has significant updates by April 2025, under pressure from creators and rivals. The site has one ongoing issue and two main changes. The first update is the new watch history function; the second is closing the TikTok Notes app. Creators still struggle with scheduling, too. These show us that TikTok is shifting its priorities as more short-form video producers enter the field.

Say Goodbye: TikTok Notes Will Shut Down

TikTok Notes, ByteDance’s effort to create a standalone photo-sharing app, is closing down. The application will go offline in May 2025. (Just two years after it was launched).

Notes were framed as an image-based sideline to TikTok’s short video format, designed to compete with Instagram’s format. After a small beginning and niche adoption, the app never achieved mainstream or stable usage.

ByteDance has suggested current users transition to Lemon8, its lifestyle-focused application that has become increasingly popular among influencers and brands. Lemon8 has a better visual design and supports longer content, so it will likely attract many of Notes’ remaining users.

TikTok Notes is shutting down its doors, which is a rare pullback for a platform that has only grown until it goes offline. This also shows that TikTok is trying to simplify its system by focusing on aspects that are more suited to its capabilities.

Watch History Feature Being Tested

The platform is also testing a feature called “Watch History” (now being tested on Android). It allows its users to revisit and watch videos that they have already seen.  It makes things easier when users scroll through their feeds quickly.

Already accessible to some beta users, the watch history tab is expected to be released more broadly later this year. For users, it offers better control over and retrieval of content. For creators, it offers new opportunities for re-engagement and long-term value from previous content, particularly for educational, product-based, or multipart videos.

This change brings TikTok closer in alignment with functionality already in place on other sites, where viewing history is relevant to discovering content and user retention.

Scheduling Bugs Still a Problem

Despite dominating short-form video, TikTok’s post-scheduling tools remain limited, especially if you compare them to other platforms. As of April 2025, we can say that scheduling is desktop only. The mobile application does not yet include this feature. Creators can reserve videos a maximum of 10 days in advance. Once scheduled, these posts can’t be modified; edits must be deleted and reposted.

Also, users report problems or delays when using third-party scheduling tools. TikTok is no longer a beginner in social media; it now faces the same challenges as the other big players.

These are not good signs: shutting down products that aren’t successful, slowly releasing long-awaited features, and failing to provide basic creator tools.

TikTok may leave a lasting impact that has less to do with trends and more to do with the help it gives. Just having good speed isn’t enough for creators; platforms also need to have good tools.
